I'm a journalism teacher who has worked in newspapers one way or the other for about 16 years. In July and August of 1998 I was design editor for a special first issue of The Observer in Santa Monica.
I also have written for the Los Angeles Times Valley Edition
Other papers I have worked for include: [In fact, when the Santa Monica paper -- which originally wanted to call itself The New Outlook -- lost the rights to that name, I suggested The Observer because it seemed a good fit for a coastal community and for me it was a tip of the hat to the first newspaper to let me be a reporter.]
Other things I've done

Other things I've done include a little writing for television. With my good friend, Jeff Schnaufer, (at right) who was my boss at The Observer, and went on to be  city editor for the Westside Weekly in Santa Monica, I co-wrote the storyline for an episode of Star Trek:Voyager. Jeff is now the newspaper adviser at Mt. San Antonio College. The episode, called "Investigations" aired in March 1996 and dealt with -- hang on to your hats -- journalism
(Gee, where'd we get THAT idea?)
It was a first for Star Trek, but I have to admit that later when Deep Space Nine developed the Jake-Sisko-as-reporter story line it worked much better. I still write television scripts on the side --not about journalism anymore -- and also wrote the script for a video teaching kids how to be safe. One of the things I enjoy about teaching rather than being a reporter is that I have more time and energy to write other things now.

Where I'm from

So, I'm originally from New Jersey and have a bachelor's degree in politics from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia (1987) and a master's degree in journalism from Indiana University (1989) in Bloomington IN. One of the reasons I enjoy advising student publications is that I had been editor-in-chief of The Hawk, the student paper at St. Joe's and was a reporter for the Indiana Daily Student.

I live in Los Angeles with my wife, Amy, who is the web producer for Women In Technology International, a non-profit group dedicated to advancing women in technology. We have dogs and cats.
