The Observer

Here is my original mockup of The Observer's front page. Our mission was to create a new local newspaper for Santa Monica to fill the void created when The Outlook closed in March 1998.

I was eager to join the project. As a journalism teacher, I felt anything that would reverse the trend of fewer newspapers in the world was a good thing.

Even though we can get so much news from the Internet, newspapers can give you the news without blurring your vision from staring into a cathode ray tube. What's more, you can still take the newspaper to the beach and not worry if you get sand in them. At least computers aren't that easy -- yet.

How it turned out

Here are some early drafts of other pages, including an early version of the front page, news pages, and the front page of the Scene section, C1. This edition had 32 pages. I did much of it, except for some critical help from some L.A. Valley and Santa Monica College students. I also had a clutch save from Amy, who rescued me when my brain shut down at about hour 34. Also, I had help from a few graphic artists, including Marianne King of Santa Monica, Sylvia Macias, and my good friend,
Julie Preston (below, she's another former Star-Gazetter).
