Most of my life has been spent in journalism. Much of that focused on government and public affairs. Being a reporter meant diving into complicated issues and quickly determining how government action (or inaction) affected people's lives.
I launched my own business, MetaDreams LLC, right here in Chemung County in 2019, making and selling games and other laser-cut products throughout New York and the U.S. Thanks to a successful Kickstarter last year, we will be shipping my games all over the world later this year.
MetaDreams got off to a great start because of Incubatorworks, a non-profit that helps people pursue their dream of launching their own business. Incubatorworks later set up an entrepreneurship center in Elmira, which I joined as part-time makerspace coordinator. This is where I have helped other entrepreneurs make prototypes, develop ideas, share strategies and network. I've also been a guest judge for graduation pitches for Incubatorworks' business start-up training class, called Co.Starters.
To move forward, Chemung County needs:
• A government that is transparent, accountable and accessible, which I can help as a former reporter
• An economy that engages the entrepreneurial spirit of the community. We need home-grown businesses that will stay in Chemung County and create jobs that last. When someone is taught entrepreneurial skills, they become more resilient, able to create their own opportunities. Even if they stay with a larger company, they will better understand how a business survives and understand how their job fits into big picture.
• To pursue policies that put more money into the pockets of those living on a budget. That's money more likely to be spent and go back into the local economy.
• Open government and fiscal transparency
• Upholding the U.S. Constitution
• Dignity and respect for all residents of Chemung County
